NAME: Garrett Hawke
CANON: Dragon Age 2
CANON POINT: He comes from almost immediately after the end of Act 2, after dueling the Arishok and being made Champion. Personally, for him, it was just over a month since the duel.
AGE: 28
HISTORY: Wiki link.
PAST GAME MEMORIES: Hokay, so. His canon point was about a month after Act 2 of the game. He agreed to go to Zhautas (signing up for a volunteer-based mission to combat the spread of a multiversal disease using... sex).
- The first month brought new experiences (showers! Lucky Charms! conditioner!), hook ups (notably Barry and Dorian), and the existential crisis of meeting other Hawkes. Good shit. He managed to start developing feelings for Barry and Dorian before......
- finally (omg!!) getting together with his canonmate Anders. They had about a... week? of being a proper couple when Justice showed up. The spirit possessing Anders' body back home. Super clingy, unstable, angry, dangerous, and possessive of Anders. Anders' resulting need to spend most of his waking hours babysitting her would come to define their relationship. Garrett's loneliness resulted in him spending great amounts of time with and falling in love with several other people. Like the poly monster he is.
- At some point he met Matthew Jamison. A misunderstanding and some shitty communication choices from Garrett created a very contentious dynamic between them, that only defrosted by tiny degrees. They're also intensely attracted to each other, screamingly thirsty, and have sex constantly. A+.
- In December, he murdered someone who raped one of his friends. For this crime, he was sent to solitary confinement. At the intake interview, Quin (the tentacle monster scientist who tried to assault Garrett only two weeks before) more or less promised to visit Garrett in his cell. He didn't, it turned out to be a psychological scare tactic, but it worked. The cell had a very white torture thing going on, and he did.... badly. It was only a week, but the effects lasted over a month.
- February: Anders vanished. (Dropped the game.) Cue unhealthy mental spiral. It had all the hits: unhealthy use of holodecks, dangerous sex, emotional avoidance, and substance abuse. There was some event shit and some Matt and Dorian feelings shit and it was all very "gay soap opera."
- March: a portal AU event. He fell into several unpleasant AU versions of Kirkwall. One of them forced him to confront what canon holds for his future, and how badly Anders spirals- basically, how toxic and unhealthy the relationship would inevitably become. Some angry best friend ranting from good ole Balthier helped really drive the "this relationship wasn't good for you" message home. Another portal involved Garrett telling Barry he loved him for the first time.
In yet another AU, Matt got taken to the Circle as an illegally free mage. He was ultimately made Tranquil, stripped of all magic and emotion. It's widely considered a fate worse than death in Thedas, and losing a loved one that way is Garrett's greatest fear. They all scrambled a lot to find a way to fix it, but not before falling into aNOTHER GODDAMN PORTAL. This one proved harder to escape- they couldn't find a portal back to Zhautas at all. So they stayed where they were and found a magical way to restore Matt back to his old self.
Then fairies. Etc. Yay.
PERSONALITY: i'm reusing my zhautas personality section so i apologize for the bulleted list
POWERS/ABILITIES: In addition to being an extremely good fighter, extremely strong, quite fast, and surprisingly flexible (really!), he has learned the abilities of a Dragon Age templar, specially trained knights who fight magic and demons. This means he can dispel magic/supernatural effects in an area of effect. He can also do something called "Silence," which, in addition to literally silencing people's voices, can temporarily prevent them from using magic or 'abilities', such as supernatural ones. He can do a "holy smite," which involves striking at someone with his weapon and holy fire is involved and it's all very "the power of Christ compels you!!" There's also an ability, which takes a lot of energy, called "Wrath of Heaven." It involves summoning a blinding pillar of light that stuns enemies and damages demons/unholy things. These powers probably (??) wouldn't need to be nerfed, because none of them last especially long or affect wide areas. They're purely battle abilities. Sometimes he uses them to make pretty lights.
SAMPLES: Prose, action.

PERSONALITY: i'm reusing my zhautas personality section so i apologize for the bulleted list
- Selfless: Hawke is a Big Damn Hero and a video game protagonist, meaning his life is full of side quests. When someone asks him for help, he might complain or be a smartass, but he will always, always help them. He will give and give and give of himself until there's little left. Example: While out on a mission to kill a dragon, stopping to pick a rare flower as a favor to a local alchemist. Offering to sacrifice himself to distract an enormous demon so his teammates could escape.
- Lighthearted: He's constantly making jokes and making light, trying to break through the horror in the world by seeing the funny side. While his terrible jokes draw as many groans as they do laughs, it usually works effectively to lighten the mood. It's a part of his charm, which is powerful- considering that at any given point, he can have at least four or five different people being basically in love with him. However, this lighthearted nature can veer into being outright flippant. Hawke is extremely sarcastic and can be pushy at times, and often deals with his emotions or problems by laughing at them or making light. Much of his humor is a deflection; he attempted to make a joke while holding his dying mother in his arms, to ease the pain. It didn't work.
- Bold: As a Big Damn Hero, he's contractually required to be obnoxiously brave and bold. He's thrown himself at dragons, enormous disease monsters, horned giants, giant spiders, and enormous tree monsters. He'll tell the viscount of the city to his face that he's doing something wrong, or waltz into an enemy encampment to deliver bad news to their leader. He wasn't afraid of a spooky lady who can turn into an enormous dragon. He brave.
- Caring: Despite being an obnoxious dipshit, Hawke has an extremely strong moral center and a big soft gooey heart. He wants nothing more than to see the people he cares about safe and happy, and he cares about a whole damn lot of people. If someone has a sufficiently heart-wrenching sob story, he'll stop at nothing to help them. Hawke will do anything for the people he loves, or feels responsible for. He's the Champion of Kirkwall, and he takes that title... semi-seriously.
- Reckless: Lord. Okay, he knowingly walked up to a dragon's lair and was like "okay let's kill this enormous fire-breathing thing." He regularly throws himself bodily at large enemies, gets right in their line of fire, and gets all up in their business just to stab them in the head. The people he was most romantically interested in were: a blood mage, an elf with anger issues and the ability to rip hearts from chests, a backstabbing thieving pirate, and an obsessed man on a crusade who was literally possessed by a spirit. He offered to sacrifice himself and didn't hesitate to throw his whole damn self at a dragon-sized thousand-eyed vagina spider demon. "Reckless" doesn't quite cover it. He has never seen a danger he wasn't a-okay with leaping into feet-first. The man has very little regard for his own safety, and doesn't necessarily think about consequences before acting.
- Extra: This covers a lot of things: dramatic, overbearing, an annoying sort of persistence. He once conned his way into an off-limits chateau by feigning an allergic reaction to a bee sting and dramatically falling to his knees screaming "If I die, tell them I DIED AT CHATEAU HAINE!!!" He can also be overbearing; he'll impose himself on others, bursting into their homes and shoving gifts at them or dragging them off to go on adventures, whether they like it or not. It digs into his intense need to connect and be social- he'll stick with the same people for years at a time, even if they get along like a bag of wet cats. However, he's been known to just... brute-force his way into caring supportive friendship with people. Watch out.
- He A Thot: (yes, this totally counts!) Hawke is very flirtatious and a huge hoe. He tends to flirt a lot just for fun, generally erring on the side of assuming people's disinterest in him, out of a self-conscious paranoia. He's very aware of how Large he is, and tends to back off the flirting when things get truly compromising- unless the other person is blatant af.
